We are three. Ron, Ginny and Johanna, who is more recently known as Jo. Ron, who was born (5 of 6) and raised in Rome NY joined the Army right out of high school and was off the see the world. Germany and Korea opened his eyes to good German beer and the willingness to eat just about anything. He returned to the States in 1986 and found himself working across the street from the bank where I worked. It was obviously meant to be.
We were married and started our own travels. Hilo HI, Killeen TX and then Aschaffenburg Germany. As the daughter of a US Marine I was used to the packing up and moving and found it comforting. I was born in Seattle WA and our family lived in Oceanside CA, Chicago IL, Herkimer NY, Bangor ME, Brewerton MA, East Meadow NY, Washingtonville NY, Cherry Point NC and Mocksville NC. Then I moved to Utica NY where Ron and I met.
We had always planned to buy a home and settle down when Ron retired from the Army but it has still come as a shock to find myself now married to a budding mushroom farmer. You read that right, no corn or soybeans for Ron. He has plans for chickens too and Jo wants an alpaca. As our only child, we have dragged Jo along with us on most adventures. Willing or not. When she was four we flew from Hilo HI to Long Beach CA where we picked up our car. Then drove across country to Fort Collins CO and onto Mocksville NC. Up to Rome NY, Burlington VT and back to Mocksville. Then drove from there to our new home in TX.
Jo and I flew to Germany by ourselves and back again three years later. Thank goodness she has always been a great traveler and is easily entertained. She loves to talk to people, she gets that from her Grandma Katie. She is almost 26 but still our baby girl and a good kid. Last fall she started working at local nursing home as a CNA and loves it. She just may have found her niche.
I have never been afraid of hard work and happily thank my Mom for that. She taught all three of her girls well. Though I will admit to being easily distracted by prospect of a new project. Tend to have at least 3 going on at the same time. But I don’t count the garden or family history as a project. They are simply part of our lives. I am pretty much a homebody who enjoys nothing more than researching family history and baking cookies. Drive the husband and kid nuts by not wanting to spend money unless necessary. Their word for me is cheap, but I prefer frugal. And as frugal/simple living is now the new black, I am among good company and make no apologies.
Our story will be told in bits and pieces, jumping back and forth over the last 20 years as we find our way to the Tiny House Farm. Memories will hit and I will start typing.
